Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD), first observed in 1996, is characterised by lesions around the devil's mouth and head. Tasmanian devils with the disease usually die within three to eight months of the lesions first appearing.

July 2008 - International experts in captive management programs were in Hobart recently to help the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program identify further measures to assist the insurance strategy that has been developed for the program. The workshop was facilitated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Conservation Breeding Specialists Group (CBSG).
